James S. Hall, an Englishman of 1848, is credited with inventing the first ever rock drilling machine - the Hall drill. This machine could be taken on horseback and had a single handle for turning purposes. Installed at its far end was a steel drill bit with sharpened tip; this was meant for penetrating rocks, which it did to an efficiency leading to its widespread use in quarrying and mining operations. Today, there exist two types of rock drilling machines - stationary and portable.

While the Hall drill had made the task of drilling through rock easier, John Bramwell's invention of the Bramwell drill in 1876 revolutionized the process. This portable machine utilized a gasoline engine as its main component that was powerful enough to be carried by a horse from one location to another. An impeccably advanced technology at that time, the Bramwell drill was primarily used by the mining vocationalists of both USA and Europe.

During  Button bit  of the 20th century, the early days of rock drilling technology was marked by the inauguration of the innovative steam drill. This pioneering machine was designed with a steam engine which provided the motivation required to generate a powerful drill bit to bore holes for excavation related tasks in quarrying and mining operations.

At the end of the 19th century, the innovative invention of a rotary drill, powered by hydraulic force, was unveiled. A rigid drill bit propelled by its hydraulic motor provided a viable method for drilling in quarrying activities and mining operations to produce desired blasts.

Currently, a wide selection of specialized rock drilling machines are employed for an array of applications, ranging from oil and gas operations to mining, quarrying and construction.
